19 Million Mobile Downloads In 1st Quarter

In figures released by Nielson Mobile, a staggering 19 million mobile game downloads took place in the first quarter of this year.

The top five downloaded games were; Tetris, Bejeweled, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, Guitar Hero III, and Pac Man.

As for style of game: Puzzle or Strategy games were by far the most popular category by revenue share, followed by action and adventure games, then sport and racing games.

Neilson have said that Guitar Hero III’s performance has caused overall downloads to increase each moth since December, hinting at a word-of-mouth viral effect.

However, Neilson also noted that the game accounts for more than half of publisher Hands On Mobile’s revenues, which could be a concern once the he dies down.

Nielsen’s stats also shed some light on who’s downloading Guitar Hero III Mobile, with 75 per cent of purchasers thought to be under 25, while 54 per cent were 13-17 years old, despite this age group representing just 11 per cent of overall mobile game purchasers.

The figures also show quite an even gender split, with 47 per cent of purchasers being male and 53 per cent female.
