Acer bring out the big guns in the form of the Aspire 8930G-7665
If you have been waiting for the next generation of laptop mobile gaming then read on because it is finally here. Acer has whipped out their latest toy, being the Acer Aspire 8930G-7665 featuring the ultra exciting quad-core processor simply put there to bring you, the user, the best gaming experience that you can expect from a laptop.
According to Acer, the laptop offers its users the chance to watch high definition video and also play highly advanced 3 dimensional gaming while staying as portable as possible.
The notebook alone is guaranteed for up to a year, however the processing chip is given with a three year warranty.
Vice president of product marketing for Acer America, Sumit Agnihotry, highlighted the importance that the laptop has for the avid gamer. Agnihotry stated, “By incorporating the latest capabilities of Intel’s Core 2 Quad mobile processors into the Aspire 8930G-7665, Acer is delivering a perfect combination of mobility, innovation and extreme gaming capabilities. Gamers and enthusiasts who enjoy HD multimedia entertainment will find the performance benefits of quad-core mobile performance in the Aspire 8930G unrivalled [by] other multimedia notebooks on the market.”
The notebook provides the user with a tidy 18.4 inch high definition CineCrystal widescreen display and supports all the latest technologies such as Blu-Ray movies, Nvidia GeForce 9700 GT graphics card and Dolby audio. According to Acer, the laptop providers the user with everything they will need to stimulate their entertainment needs.
Apparently the enjoyment doesn’t stop there as the notebook is being piped as a great tool for LAN gaming due to its high end specifications, but the price is being criticised as forcing the notebook into a niche market. The notebook will be on sale for $1,799 which is quite a lot of money for any piece of hardware. Principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, Roger Kay, stated that the price for this model will force it to appeal to far fewer people than possible.
Kay stated, “With a large gaming notebook that’s priced above $1,000, you are really not talking about a big volume segment here. There are going to be some people who want this, but it’s a small population.”
Kay also went on to discuss the possibility of a knock on effect that this notebook will have on other models in the Acer range. According to Kay it is possible that the attention that this new notebook will bring to the Acer company will be important as buyers who may not be able to afford this top of the range notebook will be looking at other Acer products that they may well be able to afford.
“With this model, Acer is showing it can do a super-high-end notebook,” Kay said, “So that has some halo effect on the rest of the line.”
The notebook will also be featuring a built in 6-in-1 digital card reader, 4MB DDR 3 RAM as well as an Acer Crystal Eye webcam. The notebook also ships with Windows Vista Premium.

Performance wise, it turned out to be a dissappointment, and it ships with a 5400 RPM, vice a 7200 RPM. I had to RMA and return this item, since the HHD specification was not as advertised…. read my NewEgg reviews.
My purchase was for $1,699.-, and NewEgg has since raised the price to $1,899-.
I feel it is an over-statement and marketing hype to label this laptop as a ‘gaming rig’, due to the limitations of the NVIDIA 9700M GT.
Though more costly, better graphic solutions would be the NVIDIA’s 9800M series, or ATi’s Mobility 3870/4870 series. For gaming, a system will only perform as well as it’s graphic solution, and there are several C2D’s that will outperform the Q9000 processor.
