Gameloft Launches Gameloft Live

Gameloft has dived headlong into social networking with an interesting new service called Gameloft Live.

The service offers free cross-platform chat and the chance to win free games for your mobile.

A quick look at the website show’s it clearly aimed at young internet users, and is so far available in the UK, US, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. The site allows you to create groups of friends, share photos, and send and receive messages.

The service is available for mobile too. You gain access by getting a SMS link when you sign up to the main site.

The service appears to be free at the moment, but for how long – who knows. It seems that you can get points for doing certain activities that are redeemable toward mobile games.

Coming across like a kid’s version of Facebook, it’s a bit unclear whether it’s just developers playing about with ideas or whether it represents a significant shift for the developer toward Web 2.0 services.

Gameloft will be hoping they can wipe the slate clean from their disastrous foray in to the iTunes-style application for selling mobile games – Gameloft Connect – which was shut down.

A recent review of Gameloft’s gaming catalogue by pocketgamer.biz showed that the developer had an average score of 7.4/10 for reviews of their games from 34 websites.
