Nintendo DS - Make way for Chrono Trigger’s return

You have been waiting for it, we have been waiting for it.  It seems that everyone has been waiting with baited breath for the release of the highly anticipated Chrono Trigger on to the Nintendo DS platform.  The game has gained legendary status amongst role playing games, but has the  migration to the DS really helped its cause?

The RPG, which rose to fame on the Super Nintendo was released with a number of other RPG games and quickly became a household name.  However over time the game was left to flutter into the background while other games kicked it further and further away.

SquareEnix, who at the time were called Squaresoft, decided to bring the game to the PlayStation 1 – the obvious decision at the time as the PlayStation 1 was a massive success in the evolution of the gaming console.  However, the game flopped due to its dodgy loading issues and lagging.

The PS1 was the wrong platform for the game and clearly didn’t do it justice, however, Chrono Trigger has blasted back onto a more fitting console it seems.

Where the PlayStation 1 version provided slow game play, the DS does quite the opposite and the fights are fast paced and just how we like them.  The DS version of the game doesn’t really provide many surprises and as predicted the game lets you choose who you want to fight and who you really don’t want to fight which can be a blessing in disguise.

The graphics are a let down of course, and what can you expect from a game that is really 14 years old.  Back in 1995 the thinking was a little 2 dimensional and not much has changed in the migration to the DS.

The audio for the game has been dubbed as possibly the greatest game soundtrack of all time which is quite an honour, although not many people go around buying games for the funky sounds it makes.

The storyline is also quite lame which is not something that really pulls the wallet out of the pocket although working your way through the game will bring a smile to any gamers face.

Being dubbed as one of the finest role playing games ever made, Chrono Trigger brings with it a pretty strong gathering, making the game a constant favourite no matter hat console it features on and due to its almost complete lack of care when distribution began all those years ago it will be a treat to many gamers to give the game a proper going over on the DS.

Chrono Trigger is just one of those games that appears to be able to stand the test of time.  Whether you like RPG or are looking to get into it then this appears to be the game for you.  You can play the game hour after hour and the chances of your boredom levels rising is quite slim.  Still, retro is not for everyone.
