Nintendo - Profits Up 14 per cent, Next Year Won’t Be So Good!
Nintendo: Ups and Downs
Things are looking good for Nintendo (as per usual) but this time things are the best they’ve ever been - Nintendo have enjoyed record profits for the last fiscal year raking in a massive $5.64 billion (around £3.73 billion for all us noble Brits). Although this figure is great in itself, for Nintendo this figure is actually a 14 per cent rise from last years figure, meaning that the guys in the board room will be passing round the cigars and champagne to celebrate…
But all you Nintendo haters out there need not worry as Nintendo themselves have come out to say that although this is great news there is no expectation for the good times to keep rolling as they expect sales of their flagship gaming console, the DSi to slow.
Despite the 14 per cent boom they experienced over the last year, Nintendo have announced that they expect operating profits to drop by 11.8 per cent over the coming year - where they got the .8 per cent from will of course remain a mystery.
They are not blaming the slow down on themselves though, they claim that the slump in sales will be down to the slump the gaming market will be enduring as more and more people turn their backs on entertainment and instead look to be able to afford essentials like food…
You call that competition?
However, don’t feel sorry for Nintendo who have been leading the gaming markets for years now - they don’t need to worry if sales drop a little. Nintendo, with their extremely popular DS and Wii consoles, have outsold both Sony and Microsoft put together making you wonder why the competition doesn’t just quit while they’re still breathing.
There is speculation, of course, around Nintendo’s projected drop in profits as many claim that they are bracing themselves for the success of the iPhone and iPod Touch gaming consoles taking attention from the newly launched DSi - after all the iPhone can do more things than simply play games!
Furthermore, the PSP2 is set to hit the stage closer to Christmas which is set to, once again, revolutionise handheld gaming - this will obviously be a worry for Nintendo who have kept their DS formula similar for years…
If Nintendo actually want to start securing their future, which for the first time in years has been under threat, then they need to develop a games console that takes the gaming experience a little further than they did by adding an extra camera and an SD card slot…
