Japanese games guru’s Nintendo have rubbished a report by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, who reported on the details of a newly re-designed DS due out later this year. Nintendo said: “We are always developing new products. However, since nothing has been announced officially, we are unable to comment at this time.”

According to the newspapers report the new DS will have larger screens, improved Wi-fi capabilities, a built-in camera and built in MP3 player. The story was published around the web rapidly, leading to Nintendo having to dismiss the claims as pure speculation.

According to Nikkei the device will cost Y20,000 and that “Nintendo plans to offer several hundred thousand units in Japan before considering overseas sales.”

The claims from the paper came after the announcement by Nintendo of an autumn conference where they plan to unveil “product news”.

The conference takes place in Japan on October 2nd and seems the logical place for Nintendo to put al the speculation to rest by releasing information on the eagerly awaited handheld.

However, with the expected cost adding around £100 to the UK price, fans could be hard pushed to find the extra value from a camera, music and a bigger screen…
