RMIT’s new in-car entertainment system

Shafkat Shahzad - Senior Technical Content ManagerThe article will provide a reader with latest news on RMIT’s new in-car entertainment system.
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia and Germany are developing an in-car entertainment system that aims to solve the age-old “Are we nearly there yet?” problem with the aid of motion controls and holographic displays.

Tentatively titled Enjoyable Interactions in the Rear Seat, the project will attempt to mix holographic displays and off-the-shelf motion sensing technology similar to gaming systems like the Microsoft Kinect and the Nintendo Wii to create a variety of rear-seat applications designed for use on long car trips by both adults and children.
This will bring fun in driving as it will open ways to entertain people during the journey itself. This is so that they focus less on reaching their destination quicker and more on enjoying the car itself.

The system would use a combination of sensors built into the rear seat armrests and screens built into the backrests to create three-dimensional images controlled purely by upper-body gestures. Dr Steffen Walz, director of RMIT’s Games and Experimental Entertainment Laboratory (GEElab), says the idea for the project came from looking at cars. Walz also envisions a range of applications for the system, from motion-controlled video games to office programs that would allow passengers to check email and perform video calls without a keyboard or any kind of remote control. The system could also be used for social applications, educational programs that teach children about their immediate surroundings. These applications would provide educational and social benefits for children.

In order to encourage communication and interaction between families, as well as educating children, it is advised to develop educational applications to allow parents in the front seat to set tasks that require a combination of real-world and virtual puzzle-solving and interaction.

Currently there are no plans to commercialise the prototype, Walz estimates the system could start appearing in passenger cars in the next five years. The technology like this takes a long time to develop. In an ideal world, this kind of in-car system will revolutionise driving and even help fix things like car sickness.

If a user has read this article then he/she would have gained knowledge about the RMIT’s new in-car entertainment system.

UHF RF Bugging Equipment

Shafkat Shahzad - Senior Technical Content ManagerThe article will provide a reader with information on UHF RF Bugging equipment. Please note that UHF Listening devices have been around for many years now. These devices use Radio Frequency transmissions to send audio in real-time to RF Receivers located a short distance away (Up to 400 metres). These units can be used to remotely listen in to what is happening in a room in which they have been placed or be connected to the telephone line to enable remote monitoring of telephone conversations. UHF Listening equipment has now been deemed as illegal to use in the UK and European Union because this operates on frequencies set aside for military applications. It is therefore illegal for Spy Equipment UK to ship this equipment to any customer in the UK and EU boundaries.

For those customers outside the UK and EU, UHF listening equipment offers a stable and established mode of transmitting clear audio over a short distance. UHF transmitters can be built into everyday objects. UHF transmitters can also be attached to a telephone line to transmit audio from both sides of a landline conversation to a receiver within range. UHF Receivers can be used to listen in live or with a recorder attached, a recording of transmitted audio can be made at the same time as listening in or alternatively a recorder can be left to work in conjunction with the receiver and voice activation facility to capture high quality recordings.

UHF transmitters and receivers are an excellent alternative to GSM devices. In some ways they are more efficient because they can be set to work alone and there are no ongoing extra costs for transmission of audio, that would always be associated with GSM transmitting units.

If a user has read the article then he/she would have gained knowledge about UHF RF Bugging equipment.

The phone runs Android 2.3 OS and features a 1.4GHz single core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255T processor, 2GB of storage, 512MB of system memory, 4.2″ Aquos display (540×960) that supports 3D (without special glasses) and a 3D camera that is capable of making 3D pictures and shooting 3D HD video (1024×720).

The phone has an 8MPix CMOS stereo camera with two eyes. It can make 3D photos and videos that a user can view on his/her TV via the micro HDMI slot but for that a user will need 3D glasses to view 3D contents unless a user has a TV featuring same “glassless” technology.

Body
The phone’s dimensions are 127?64?11.9 mm / 5×2.52×0.47 in and it weighs in 138 g / 4.87 oz. The back panel reveals the battery, the SIM and the SD card slots when removed as well as the relatively loud mono speaker.

Display
Docomo SH-12C uses the proprietary Aquos matrix. The phone has a 4.2″ screen with the resolution of 540×960. The screen is capacitive and it supports multitouch.

3D Mode
The phone creates two separate images with one eye getting its own. A user can simply test this by closing left or right eye in turn. In every case a user will be able to see a beautiful and clear picture. If a user uses both eyes, then he/she will see the two images combined due to different angles of both eyes and the complicated mechanics of the 3D image formation.

Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth
The handset has all standard communication capabilities and it’s 802.11 b/g/n protocol is supported. USB 2 helps to charge the phone and Bluetooth 3.0 deals with all modern protocols including files transfer

Camera
An 8 MP CMOS camera offers standard features. A user can switch on to 3D shooting by simply pressing a dedicated button on the screen, which activates the second lens. The autofocus is available for both modes (2D/3D).

Camera resolution
• 2448?3264
• 1944?2592
• 1536?2048
• 1080?1920
• 1200?1600
• 540?960
• 480?640
• 240?320

Video resolution
• 1280?720
• 540?960
• 480?640
• 240?320

Menu and Interface
Docomo SH-12C can operate with a Cyrillic keypad. In Docomo SH-12C there is a proprietary TapFlow Ui interface. Processor and memory are enough for “heavy” games and Mkv

The start screen can work both in 2D and 3D. If a user wants to switch between modes then he/she can simply use an icon in the bottom left hand corner. If a user turns the phone 90 degrees the screen will automatically go into 3D mode.

• Memory: 1GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM
• Storage: 160GB 7200rpm SATA HDD
• Display: 10.1-inch diagonal (1024×600)
• Graphics: Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics
• Wireless: Broadcom 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR

• Weight: 2.64 lb with 4-cell battery (not including weight of AC adapter).
• Power: Standard 4-cell (28WHr)Lithium-ion battery or 6-cell (66WHr) extended-life battery

Build and Design
The Mini 5102 is roughly one inch thick and weighs less than 3 pounds and its full-size keyboard makes typing quick emails or editing documents really easy. The brushed metal lid features a durable black finish and only suffers from a slight amount of flex under heavy pressure.

Screen and Speakers
The 10.1-inch screen on the Mini 5102 is a nice LED-backlit display panel with a 1024×600 native resolution. The matte screen surface is a welcome change compared to the glossy screens as found in netbooks. The matte surface helps to prevent glare and reflection on the surface of the screen under bright indoor lights and helps improve sunlight readability.

Vertical viewing angles are average with some colour distortion when viewing from below and some over-exposed colours when viewed from above. Horizontal viewing angles are better with colours remaining unchanged at extremely wide viewing angles. The built-in speaker performance on the Mini 5102 is really good.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The HP Mini 5102 features a large, spill-resistant keyboard that is 95% of full size. Most of the primary keys are the same size as the keys a user will find on a typical notebook and the spacing is likewise normal, but the space bar and some of the keys that are used less frequently are smaller than normal.

Input and Output Ports
In terms of port selection the HP Mini 5102 offers the average bells and whistles. A user gets three USB 2.0 ports, a 4-in-1 media card reader, dedicated headphone and microphone jacks, Ethernet port, a VGA output and a dedicated wireless on/off switch.

If a user has read the article then he/she would have learnt about HP Mini 5102’s specification and functionality.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T500

Shafkat Shahzad - Senior Technical Content ManagerThe article will provide information on Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-T500. The T500 features a 10.1 megapixel, 1/2.3-inch SuperHAD CCD sensor coupled with a 5x, 33-165mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar zoom lens. The T500’s touch panel is a wide-format (16:9 aspect ratio) 3.5 inch variant with 230,000 dots resolution.

Other key features include a face detection system capable of locking onto up to eight faces, Sony’s advanced in-camera slide show tools that allow the addition of sophisticated shot-to-shot transitions and the incorporation of background music, and HDMI connectivity (via an included dock) for easily getting playback to an HDTV.

Shooting modes includes following:
• Auto: The T500’s basic point-and-shoot mode, with Face Detection control, Scene Recognition, and red-eye reduction.
• Program: Point-and-shoot operation with expanded user input – access to sensitivity, white balance, flash options, color modes, and IS.
• Scene: The T500 groups its nine scene presets – including sports, twilight, and portrait options – in their own separate menu.
• Movie: The T500 can capture video clips with stereo audio at up to 1280×720/30 fps; zooming during movie recording is enabled.

The T500’s playback mode has several advanced features. But the list of retouch options here is also trimmed down compared to many Sonys, eliminating many of the “fun” features (filters, Happy Face Retouch, etc.) in favour of a succinct but very useful and businesslike range of in-camera edits that includes crop, rotate, and red-eye reduction tools.

Video Capture
T500 offers HD video capture at up to 1280×720 (720p) at 30 fps. The movie audio is captured in stereo via the T500’s front-mounted stereo microphone. From this capture, the T500 generates MPEG-4 video files utilizing the AVC/H.264 codec, which combines small file sizes with support for high-quality video and stereo audio. The T500 delivers an exceptionally good video capture performance for a digital still camera.

The T500’s functionality starts with its two-stage sliding lens, which allows the camera’s picture-taking hardware to “disappear” when the cover is closed and provides a symmetrical look that suggests a lot of work on the part of the T500 design team.

Auto Focus
The T500 boasts the typical array of auto focus modes – auto multi-area and center point options – as well as an automatic center-area mode and four approximate distance options (which attempt to lock focus first near the specified distance: 1 meter, 3 meters, 7 meters, or infinity).

Lens and Zoom
The T500 wears a 5x (33-165mm) Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar optic with a maximum aperture range of f/3.5-4.4. For extreme close-ups, the T500 offers some truly exceptional performance for an ultracompact in this dedicated macro mode.

Battery
T500 has a nicely designed battery charger, but it is recommended to buy a couple of spare batteries for the T500 if a user wants to get in a full shooting day without recharging.

The Samsung Sliding PC 7

There is no doubt that the netbook market has taken a little bit of a hit as a result of the rise of the tablet PC, but there are still a number of hybrid devices planned which bridge the gap between traditional laptops and new touch-friendly slate devices. The Samsung Sliding PC 7 is one such device, combining the full physical QWERTY keypad and Windows-compatible hardware of a netbook with a flexible form factor that can make it look very much like the latest, greatest tablet PC.

In terms of specifications the Samsung Sliding PC 7 is relatively well equipped given its netbook heritage. It sports a 10.1 inch display with a native resolution of 1366×768. This display is touch sensitive and uses capacitive technology to detect multiple simultaneous inputs, just like dedicated tablet devices. Onboard the current generation of Intel Atom processors, clocked at around 1.66GHz, should keep things humming along nicely, equalling the way a laptop deals with common programs and processes. You get 2GB of RAM along with a 32GB or 64GB solid state hard drive which should allow it to load up the operating system very quickly.

What sets this netbook apart is the fact that the screen is mounted on a sliding mechanism which allows it to be fitted flush against the keypad when you do not want to use it. This helps it avoid the clamshell design which is the usual way in which a laptop deals with folding up for portability’s sake.

Windows 7 is the operating system used by the Samsung Sliding PC 7 and it could be in this area that it really trumps some of its tablet rivals. While tablet-oriented platforms like Android and iOS can only really exist in their own ecosystems, Windows 7 is a full desktop OS which does not skimp on functions for video streaming, web browsing and program compatibility. A vast library of software and sites can be accessed using this device which you might find difficult to use on any other tablet.

A whole host of other hardware features are present on the Samsung Sliding PC 7. This includes a 1.3 megapixel webcam built into the bezel surrounding the display for online video chatting, an HDMI output to hook it up to your TV or projector and a memory card slot for expanding the onboard storage space and transferring files.

You might wonder whether this device will be able to compete with the way a full netbook or laptop deals with software, or whether it straddles the line between PCs and tablets too broadly, failing to live up to the promise of either category of gadgets. In essence the Samsung Sliding PC 7 is designed for those who want the convenience of using a tablet when they are sat on the sofa browsing the web and using social media apps combined with the work-oriented power of a laptop. This could make it quite a niche device, but one that doubtless deserves an audience.
