Sony PSP phone not coming any time soon

The iPhone is undoubtedly taking huge steps in the market for handheld gaming consoles as well as mobile handsets, so it makes sense for Sony, with their mobile handset arm Sony Ericsson, to start thinking about the Sony PSP Phone.  However, the news is in and unfortunately it just is not going to happen.

Apparently Sony Ericsson are keen for the phone to happen, however, Sony have voted against the plans as they are not willing to place the Playstation name to appear anywhere near such a handset.  However, it gets worse for Sony Ericsson, as Sony have claimed that they would consider such a move in the future, but only if someone else was planning on making the phone.  It seems as though Sony is not very pleased with Sony Ericsson’s recent performance in the market and if the iPhone is going to have any competition it would appear that Sony doesn’t feel as though Sony Ericsson is up to it.

Sony have made their opinion on the matter clearly heard, claiming that technology is not up to scratch for their plans – making us think that they have got one hell of a PSPhone lined up for us, one day…

“In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone,” commented Sony on the matter.

The decision was made after Sony Ericsson actually devised a proposal to Sony who were clearly keen for the handset to become reality, however Sony walked away feeling as though Sony Ericsson’s plans would not bring the required user experience that Sony were looking for.

Sony are taking good care of their PSP, which is one of their most popular devices.  Sony won’t want to be rushing into anything without taking serious care over any decision.  Sony have watched on the sidelines as the iPhone and iPod Touch have started to make a name for themselves amongst even the most hard core handheld gamers.  The PSP has also had a pretty tough time since the massive success of the Nintendo DS has pushed the PSP right to the back of the handheld gaming race.

Sony have also been facing difficulties as a knock-on effect of the current economic downturn, as Sony have recently made massive cuts in employees and recently recorded losses of $346 million.  The next steps that Sony take must be very carefully thought out and it has been suggested that one of the first things they do in 2009 is tackle the apparent rise of the seemingly popular N-Gage platform.  Still it is being said that Sony should be all right due to their many years in the market and their long standing customer base around the world.
