Sony to Launch its own App Store for PSP
You would have hoped this was on Sony’s cards for a while, but its taken till now to announce a new direct access online shop for the PSP.
Although it’s not a direct rip-off of the iPhone App Store, it’s fair to presume it was influenced by the idea.
So what’s new? Well the main selling point for this is that you will no longer have to connect your PSP to your PC or PS3 to download content. Sadly, to this point its only been confirmed for a Japanese launch this autumn, however it will turn in to a world wide launch due to the online mechanics of the store. To celebrate the shops opening, a free copy of Mainichi Issyo Portable is reportedly available for free download when the store goes live.
One example of Sony’s efforts to try oust the iPhone from its handheld downloadable app-glory is to introduce an “infrastructure mode” for online connected PS3s. This will allow PSPs to connect to the console an access online interactivity function, such as multiplayer gaming.
Sony’s trying desperately hard to make the new PSP as accessible as possible, and I’ve got a feeling this might just do the trick.
