T-Mobile dolling out free games for users who don’t mind watching some advertising

Run out into the streets, find your friends, tell your neighbours, scream it out at the top of your lungs.  T-Mobile is handing out free games to its customers in an attempt to turn the mobile gaming world upside down.

But wait, there’s a downside, as there is with every good bit of news.  T-Mobile are more than happy for you to play their games for free from now on, as long as you are prepared to sit through a load of adverts.  Not really all that bad for what you’re getting I suppose.  It’s a bit like when you watch a clip on the MSN website and you have to watch some American dude spraying his armpits with the latest deodorant, and you’re not even paying attention because you’re thinking, ‘what is going on?’.

So what are you getting in exchange for your time and advertisement watching ability?  T-Mobile customers are being offered Poker Million II – as long as they watch two adverts before playing the game.  Doesn’t sound too bad to you?  You also have to watch two adverts after you’ve played the game as well…ouch!  That’s a lot of boredom.

Damien Byrne, head of New Proposition Development for T-Mobile here in the UK, claims that, “The launch of ad-funded games further strengthens T-Mobile’s mobile gaming offering to consumers. We continue to make mobile gaming easier than ever before and a more enjoyable experience for our customers.”

Fair play to them at T-Mobile.  If this catches on then soon we will be supplied with a magical array of entertaining games that will all be provided for the price of a couple of minutes of advertisement watching.  Not too dissimilar to watching television.

The set up is hosted through Digistores, an Ad-funded digital entertainment firm who say that they will only be offering games to customers where their handsets are compatible, leaving out all that unnecessary confusion and wasted time.

Steve Gordon, the managing director of Digistores, is clearly over the moon with the move, saying, “We are delighted to be working with T-Mobile on this new and innovative project. Our experience in the mobile gaming and advertising market and T-Mobile’s web’n’walk mobile broadband service are the perfect match and we look forward to attracting new customers to mobile games. Our technology allows advertising to target specific segments which makes it a successful proposition for advertisers and content partners alike.”

The best news of all comes to T-Mobile’s Web’n’Walk users who won’t even be charged for using their mobile internet capabilities to download the game as it’s all included in their tariff.

It all sounds great, I hear you say, but when will I be able to play a game that I actually want to play?  Well, T-Mobile have a few games currently in development for their customers.  T-Mobile users will soon be able to play IQ Booster, Pro-Bowling, Pool Star and Einstein’s Brain Game to name but a few, with more to follow, all in the same ‘you watch and then play’ vein.
