The DSi - Know the facts…
What you need to know about the new DSi!
We’ve all been waiting with what can only be described as baited breathe for the introduction of the Nintendo DSi console here in Britain. It’s a new little beast of a portable console that gamers have been itching to get their thumbs on for months…
It landed on our shores on April 3 in either black or white and has so far brought in more pre-orders than any other console. But why is it set to be one of the most successful handheld gaming consoles ever? Let me explain…
Did you know…
• The DSi is the third baby to come out of the mother ship known as the DS gaming experience. The DS consoles have gone from strength to strength and are the biggest selling games console of all time. Sorry GameBoy! The DS consoles have sold more than 100 million units around the world…
• The DSi has taken another step along the evolutionary road introducing an even slimmer casing with larger screens and sped up processors. The move doesn’t come as much surprise as the DS Lite took the same direction when it evolved from the original DS console.
• Thanks to the dirty old recession we are paying more pennies for our DSi here in Britain – back when the DSi first came out all those months ago in Japan, 200 Yen was worth around one of our pounds – now a pound will only get you 139 Yen. This means that Japanese gamers only paid around £100 when the console came out, now due to the weakened pound we’re being forced to pay 50 per cent more than that.
• Nintendo aren’t exactly whipping out the red carpet for the launch of the DSi here in the western world – that’s because there is no software specific to the DSi yet so they aren’t exactly looking to attract too much attention just yet. However, perhaps they just don’t think it’s worth doing any work any more as the pre-orders for the DSi have surpassed 10 times the number of DS Lite units.
• The DSi’s in-built operating system is modelled off the Wii’s system allowing for games to be “hot-swappable” so if you thought you had to turn your console off to change a game you would be wrong.
• There are two low-rez cameras fitted onto the console which can be used for a number of different things like video chatting and taking and editing photos.
• The DSi is acting more like a portable gaming console should act as an SD card slot has been attached to the DSi, allowing different types of media to be moved off and on the console. Unfortunately the DSi only allows AAC and turns its nose up at the more popular MP3.
