Vodafone, Nokia push for the mobile Java standards
The world’s largest manufacturer of mobile phones and the largest wireless operator of Europe have launched the initiative to simplify the Java standards for mobile phones in a move targeted to help the developers to create software for the multiple Java-enabled phones, thus providing the users with wider choice of applications based on Java. Under the initiative, Vodafone Group PLC and Nokia Corp. hope to drive this specification development for the mobile Java open standards-based services architecture, the companies told Thursday.
While this initiative does not plan to introduce new Application Programming Interface (API) specifications, it intends to establish several numbers of Java Specification Requests new component and clarifications to the existing specifications in the move to define consistent services architecture of Java API, according to companies. This unified architecture of services, they said, can enable a Java-based application to run on the mobile devices from various vendors. The architecture also includes security enhancements for the services such as administration and delivery of software components to the mobile devices over air, resulting in the cost savings for maintaining the mobile software.
Moreover, this initiative looks for harmonize the Java licensing terms and principles in conjunction with the Sun Microsystems Inc. Various leading players in global mobile device industry have signaled the support for this initiative already, including mobile device operators T-Mobile International AG and Orange SA, and the handset manufacturers Sony Ericsson Communications AB and Siemens AG. The responsibilities and objectives of the unified services of mobile Java architecture will be coordinated and aligned with several organizations, like the World Wide Web (WWW) Consortium, Open Mobile Terminal Platform and the OSGIi Alliance. All the specifications achieved by this initiative will ensure the backward compatibility along with the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) environment, according to Vodafone and Nokia.
