Want To Watch Eastenders And Pause Your Wii Game?
While the mass media markets of the UK have been growing ever closer to the gaming giants, the recent announcement that the BBC will be allowing Wii owners to interrupt their games and watch their favourite programs has gone down very well. The system centres on the infamous BBC iPlayer which is causing much of a stir in the internet world, and already accounts for around five percent of total UK internet traffic.
The system was only launched last December but to say that it has taken the world by storm is very much an understatement. Using a number of deals with companies such as Nintendo, via the Wii product, the BBC are bringing traditional media and gaming very much closer together. This is something which has been rumoured for some time and while we have seen some small scale/ arrangements and partnerships, the BBC iPlayer is the latest big thing to hit the world of gaming. But what next?
The iPlayer has very quickly become the most popular media delivery system on the internet and it must surely open many new doors for the gaming industry in the future. Will we be able to play interactive via the iPlayer? Will we soon be able to record our games and show our best moves to the world via the iPlayer?
While many people are excited just because of the fact that Wii players will now be allowed to watch TV programs and put their games on pause, the long term picture is where it will all happen. Gaming is an area of the internet where they have never been slow in coming forwards and we will surely see some new and exciting moves with the iPlayer in due course. Traditional Media and the Gaming industry is a match made in heaven for many, bringing together massive user numbers and the latest technology…..time will tell what happens next.
