Will Mobile Games Dictate The Direction Of Future Handsets?
While it would be wrong to say that the mobile game industry has been welcomed into all areas of the mobile phone market, slowly but surely we are seeing increased take up and more interest in the service. However, when you consider that the traditional mobile handset of today was not really created for mobile games, will we see the mobile gaming market dictate the future direct of the handset market, or will it also be down to the communication facilities of the handset?
The beauty about the mobile gaming market is that it has the potential to bring in substantial income, via both advertising and download charges, meaning that at some stage it will become more and more an integral part of the handset. If you have ever played a mobile game you will realise that in many cases the screen is a little slow, often a little hard to read and the detail can be disappointing because of the reduced size. However, we are now seeing the likes of EA and Gameloft joining the party and staking serious money into their development programs.
The likes of EA are not prepared to invest millions of pounds into the sector without having some kind of say on the delivery system, so while many may not like it, we will at some stage see a handset which is more focused on gaming than communications. The gaming industry is a sector which does actually move markets and can attract not only massive customer numbers but very high income streams. Each and every handset manufacturer is always on the lookout for the next big fashion, the next big idea and it may well be here.
There is no doubt that the quality of mobile phone games has increased over the last few years, but the addition of reliable mobile broadband could very well take the industry to a new level – much to the delight of network providers, handset manufacturers and many customers.
