World Cosplay Record Broken - Parade through Streets of London Expected
So a few weeks ago I had a bit of a laugh discussing the London Games Week Cosplay world record attempt…well it looks like I’ll have to eat my paper mache hat, as a large collection of uber-nerds have set a new world record.
The record was broken at London’s Excel Centre in Docklands on Saturday with 342 gamers dressing up as the likes of Zelda and Solid Snake. Amazingly, a record attempt last week by a group of German cosplayers broke the last one – a measly 88 people - with a total of 337, so its almost like another gold medal for the UK – however, with people who’s only form of exercise is nerding it u a notch on forums, and thumb workouts with gamepads.
Festival organiser, Duncaan Best, boased to the BBC that although “It was a bit touch-and-go for a while…the gaming community really stepped up to the challenge.”
Challenge…quite.
It’s also entirely worth noting that there were infact actual proper rules for the contest which were;
• Your character must come from a film, TV show, book or comic
• However, your character must have starred in a video game before appearing in other media
Which make the fact the 50 – I might have to call them ‘nincompoops’ – still turned up dressed as Lego batman, and other characters. Bet they felt pretty silly standing outsidein the rain while wearing their mum’s tights and some pansy black booties.
Mr Best said that, “It’s a measure of how games have really got into popular culture.” He defended the cosplay event as, “no different from seeing fans dressed as Romulans or Mr Spock at a Star Trek convention.”
